Cumberland Deputy Killed While Responding To 911 Call

Deputies said 26-year-old Christopher Matthews was responding to a fight after lunch and driving on

River Road, near Game Road

, in northern Cumberland County, when his patrol car went off the road and flipped.

Matthews was pinned inside his vehicle, deputies said.

Deputies are still trying to determine what led to the accident.

"We feel very sad today," Cumberland County Sheriff Moose Butler said. "His mother and father have been notified, and we certainly have sympathy for the family because we lost a very close person within the sheriff’s office."

Matthews is survived by a mother, father and girlfriend. He had worked for the sheriff's office since January 2002.
