WASHINGTON, N.C. — The wife of a Camp Lejeune Marine was one of many military wives who spoke Sunday as hundreds of people gathered in Washington to show support for U.S. troops.
The number who attended was far fewer than organizers had expected as they rallied on the National Mall one day after 10s of thousands protested against the war in Iraq.
Sherri Francescon's husband serves in the Marine Corps in Iraq. She said Sunday that the anti-war demonstration left her frustrated. and that she wants her husband and other troops to know that America supports them.
Organizers of the demonstration acknowledged that their rally would be much smaller than the anti-war protest but had hoped that as many as 20,000 people would turn out.
