UNCP Fires Sex Offender Who Taught Swimming Class

PEMBROKE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is reviewing its background check policy after a registered child sex offender got a job working with children at the university.

Chancellor Allen Meadors said student William Sequioa Carter, who taught young kids how to swim in a class at the university, was fired last Friday after a mother with a child in the class discovered Carter was a registered sex offender.

In 1999, Carter was convicted of taking indecent liberties with a minor in Cabarrus County. He was initially charged with statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl.

Meadors said background checks are conducted for certain employees, but not students and faculty members. He said no one in the UNC system does a background check on students unless they indicated they had a prior record when they enrolled.

Chasity Carter, whose 3-year-old son was in the class, apparently became aware of William Carter's background after her sister found the man's name on a list of Robeson County residents on the state's sex offender registry. Chasity Carter's sister also had a child in the swim class.
