Authorities said Officer R. K. Jones, who joined the police department in 1998, shot and killed Arvie Lee Fudge III, 25, of Salisbury, outside a Durham apartment complex after he raised a pistol.
Police were dispatched to a trespassing call at 1:45 a.m. at Morreene West Apartments, where Fudge and his brother had been arguing. Police negotiators tried to persuade Fudge via cell phone to surrender, but he refused.
Jones, who is assigned to the police department's Selective Enforcement Team, is on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting, a spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department said.
