Authorities Find 'Secret Hiding Place' After Second Search Of Sapikowski Home

The Chapel Hill Police Department returned a second search warrant affidavit to the Orange County Clerk of Court that also revealed that Adam Sapikowski was a member of a gun club. Sapikowski competed in paintball competitions and may have received awards and certificates for participating, according to the affidavit.

Investigators searching the Sapikowski house a second time on May 26 seized an NRA certificate, marksman patches and two photos and a plaque from Camp Rockmont, a private Christian camp near Asheville.

Police said they conducted the search after Lauren Sapikowski's told police that her brother had a "secret hiding place" in his room that could contain evidence. Police searched and found a security safe consistent with a key Sapikowski had given his girlfriend.

Investigators believe Sapikowski used a .410 single-shot shotgun to kill his parents. A medical examiner said Sapikowski's 52-year-old father, James, was shot three times in the head and his 49-year-old mother, Alison, was shot once in the shoulder and once in the head.

Police believe the shootings happened on the weekend of April 29. The bodies, which were wrapped in blankets and starting to decompose, were found in the family's upscale house May 14.

Earlier this week, a judge ordered Sapikowski's private school, Durham Academy, to turn over the teen's school and disciplinary records.

Sapikowski is scheduled to appear in court Monday for a bond hearing, but District Attorney Jim Woodall indicates he will oppose any efforts to release the suspected killer. If he were to be released on bond, the court would have to appoint a legal guardian.
