CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina is putting together a systemwide task force to examine safety on campuses after a UNC-Wilmington student was shot to death by a former boyfriend.

The Task Force on the Safety of the Campus Community will include personnel in student affairs, admissions and public safety.

Joni Worthington, a spokeswoman for the UNC system, said he group will look into the feasibility of criminal background checks and broader issues of campus safety.

John Peck lied to UNCW. officials on his application about his convictions for felony sexual assault. But campus officials found out too late.

Police said Peck killed Christen Naujoks on June 4. A few days later, he killed himself while fleeing from police.

A month earlier, UNCW student Jessica Faulkner, of Cary, was killed in her dorm. UNCW student Curtis Dixon, 21, of Charlotte, has been charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, and first-degree kidnapping.

University officials have said Dixon -- like Peck - also had failed to tell the university about an earlier misdemeanor larceny conviction.
