Power Outages Significantly Reduced In State

The storm left a path of death and destruction over the course of several hours. Now, people statewide are starting to pick up the pieces.

Isabel is blamed for at least three deaths in North Carolina. A utility worker was electrocuted near Newport early Thursday night. A Franklin County man died after his car ran into a downed tree, and one person was killed in Chowan County after a tree fell on their car.

Many people who survived the storm did so in the dark. Nearly 700,000 North Carolinians were without power during Isabel. Those numbers have gone down considerably in the days since.

As of 7 a.m. Monday North Carolina's electric cooperatives reported 23,771 outages -- the majority located in the northeastern section of North Carolina.Dominion Power reported 47,558 outages in the state and public power utilites report 8,000 outages.Progress Energy and Duke Power report no outages.
