ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A spokesman for Dominion Power said the system that provides power to Halifax County likely will have to be rebuilt after damages caused by Hurricane Isabel.
Spokesman Bryant Brooks said 95 percent of the customer base is out. He said damage is extensive, restoration will be massive and the duration of the outage will be extended for as long as 10 days for most people.
Roanoke Rapids Mayor D.N. Beale said it will take weeks, and maybe months, to clean up damage from Isabel. He said he is encouraged by the fact that people are helping each other in the recovery effort.
In Northampton County, a motorist was injured when the car they were driving crashed into a tree across N.C. 46 near the town of Gaston. Authorities also said someone broke into the Weldon ABC store and robbed it.
