Rivers, Smith Top Winner's List at Triangle's First Sports Award Show

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University quarterback Philip Rivers was named the athlete of the year at the Evening of Champions event.

Former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill head coach Dean Smith received a lifetime achievement award.

The group also named the top 10 sports moments of 2003:

  1. UNC signs Roy Williams as Basketball Coach
  2. UNC Women's Soccer National Championship
  3. Duke's Men's and Women's Basketball ACC Championships
  4. N.C. State's Gator Bowl win over Notre Dame
  5. Broughton High School State Women's Soccer Championship
  6. Patrick Pope, St. Augustine's College, scores 43 points in 2003 CIAA Championship
  7. Carolina Hurricanes selects Peter Laviolette as coach
  8. Durham Bulls win AAA Championship and Carolina Mudcats win AA Championship
  9. CIAA Champions
  10. CASL National Champions
