Police said Colette Moss, 22, died Thursday.
Kavonia Newman, 23, of Durham, and a 2-year-old girl are listed in critical condition.A 14-year-old girl is listed in stable condition.
Police said all suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body, including their heads. The man who owns the house said the two women lived there; he was not sure about the children.
Late Wednesday, police say two men entered the apartment houseand fired several shots. A light-colored SUV, possibly a silveror beige Lexus, with temporary, cardboard Virginia license plates,was seen driving away.
Police also say a witness who saw a man shooting as he fled thehouse is in protective custody.
Durham Mayor Bill Bell has been pushing for a safer city since his campaign two years ago. He said Durham's crime rate has dropped four percent, but he admits it is not enough.
"It's not just a police problem. It's got to be a community-wide problem. That's what we're trying to focus in on," he said.
Claire Doyle, who lives just a couple blocks from the shooting scene, insists she still feels safe in her neighborhood, but she wants the community to come together to improve safety.
"It hasn't made people angry, just shocked and sad," she said.
Thursday night, residents of the community held a candlelight vigil to honor the victims.An Evening of Unity vigil is scheduled near the East Markham Street home Friday at 8 p.m.
