ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Police say the results of an autopsy show a man found dead on a Halifax County highway died of natural causes.
Authorities said 31-year-old Jeffrey Hunsucker had been called a "John Doe" because when he was found he had no shirt and no identification.
A woman who called 911 said she saw Hunsucker along I-95, near mile marker 169, who was staggering and then collapsed.
Hunsucker died Wednesday after being placed on life-support equipment Tuesday night at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids. Authorities say he died of congestive heart failure.
Investigators first thought someone beat Hunsucker and dumped his body along I-95. His van was found along a farm path not far from the interstate. They said a lawn mower has been stolen from the van.
