SEVEN SPRINGS, N.C. — A shopkeeper's son-in-law was killed Saturday, when he tried to shoot it out with an intruder inside the family grocerystore in Wayne County.

Sheriff's deputies say each man was hit multiple times with handgun bullets.

Ricky Avon Thompson of Seven Springs was killed. He'd raced several miles from his home to Ralph Casey's Grocerybecause his mother-in-law called after hearing someone inside the store.

Thompson arrived and confronted Roy George Legg, a Wayne County resident who had no permanent address.

Legg had surgery and was listed in stable condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
