HINESVILLE, Ga. — A truck driver is dead and some injuries are reported after an Amtrak passenger train which made a stop in North Carolina hit the truck Tuesday morning in southeast Georgia.
A spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol says the truck, carrying lumber, pulled in front of the train, the southbound Silver Star.
An Amtrak spokesman says 15 people boarded the train at the Raleigh station, but he does not know how many of those passengers were on the train when it wrecked at 7:20 a.m.
Authorities say 27 people -- 5 employees and 22 passengers -- were hurt in the accident.
The engine and ten other cars left the track, but the train remained upright.
