Justice Department Investigates Contributions To Edwards Campaign

Posted Updated

WASHINGTON — The United States Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into donations made to Sen. John Edwards presidential campaign.

Published reports state that donations were made by five employees at a prominent Little Rock, Ark. law firm. The employees reportedly gave a total of $10,000 to Edwards' campaign last month.

The donations were returned after Edwards campaign officials found out that one employee said she expected to be reimbursed by her boss for her contribution.

A federal election law limits individuals to giving $2,000 per candidate and prevents them from funneling contributions through others.
