Alabama Robbery Suspect Shot During Violent Encounter With Rocky Mount Police

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A showdown between a suspected bank robber and Rocky Mount police turned violent in a hotel parking lot Thursday afternoon.

Police got a tip that the suspect from a bank robbery in Alabama was in town. Half a dozen officers cornered the man in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Winstead Avenue.

Police Captain Larry Wells said the man tried to leave the scene in his blue pickup truck but drove into a marked police car. The truck had large tires that actually drove on top of the car.

Officers opened fire and shot the man several times.

He was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries. His name hasn't been released.
