Highway Patrol Reopens Probe on Racial Profiling

RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Highway Patrol is reopening itsinternal investigation of a trooper accused of racial profiling.

A Superior Court judge ruled last week that Trooper ClintonCarroll had engaged in racial profiling in pulling over 34-year-oldRodriguez "Juan" Villeda.

The judge dismissed a drunk-driving case against Villeda.

In May, the patrol found no evidence of ethnic profiling andcleared Carroll of wrongdoing.

Sergeant Everett Clendenin says the patrol is reopening itsinvestigation after hearing new evidence from witnesses' testimony.

Upon his request, Carroll was transferred from Durham in Augustand now patrols Alamance County.
