Section Of NC 96 In Johnston Co. Remains Closed After Tanker Spill

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons ofgasoline overturned in Johnston County, spilling more thanhalf of its load Thursday.

Trooper C.P. Oravits with the state Highway Patrol says apassenger car failed to yield to the truck, causing a collision onstate Highway 96.

The truck overturned, puncturing one of the tanks. About5,200 gallons spilled into a nearby ditch, but authorities saythey have it contained.

Authorities transferred the remaining fuel in the truck to asecond tanker.

All but four families that were evacauted were allowed to return to the area. Residents were put up inSmithfield for the night.

The stretch of road will likely reopen sometime Friday.

The driver of the car was charged with failure to yield. The driver, apassenger and the truck driver were treated at a local hospital forminor injuries.
