CLAYTON — A Clayton police officer and a suspect are dead after an undercover drug bust at a fast food restaurant Friday morning.

Authorities received a tip that a drug deal was about to be made at 10 a.m. Friday in the Bojangles' Restaurant parking lot located at 11900 U.S. Highway 70 West.

"The suspect put his car in reverse and ran over one of our officers and would not stop. Shots were fired and the suspect was killed," says Clayton Police Chief Gary Ragland.

"I heard the gunshots go off. My heart was in my throat. I didn't know what to do," says eyewitness Darryl Sauls.

Police say the suspect backed his car over Clayton Police Lieutenant Monica Carey. She was dragged 30 feet by the car.

Carey was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say they found $1,000 worth of heroin in the car driven by the suspect.
