DURHAM — A state trooper was assaulted by a motorist Tuesday morning after stopping him for a minor traffic violation.
The incident happened at a BP gas station on Hillsborough Street in Durham. Durham police and the Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter and took three people into custody.
"After the trooper stopped the vehicle, some type of fracas occurred and the trooper was assaulted," says state trooper R.L. Hayes.
The trooper was taken to the emergency room at Duke Medical Center. They say he was conscious and alert. Authorities would not say how the trooper was assaulted or if a weapon was involved.
