ROCKY MOUNT, NC — The S.B.I. is using a unique concept in teaching arson investigators what to look for when trying to determine what started a suspicious fire.
The three-day exercise ended yesterday at the Country Club Cove Apartments. Teachers started fires by tossing lit Molotov cocktails into the building. Firefighters stood ready to prevent the fires from spreading and to show how fire fighting can change a crime scene.
The apartment complex was ruined by floods from Hurricane Floyd in 1999. The city owns the property after buying it with money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the buyout program.
The apartments will be used again as a classroom this weekend during the North Carolina Disaster Training Expo in Rocky Mount.
