Private N.C. Gambling Operations Nervous About Proposed Lottery

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Gambling companies are worried about the prospect of a statewide lottery in North Carolina, saying it could significantly impact their business.

North Carolina is home to a casino operated by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee. Also, about 10,000 video poker machines are scattered across clubs, convenience stores and arcades, and more than 300 bingo operations can offer as much as $500 in prizes.

I. Nelson Rose, a law professor at Whittier Law School in California, says a lottery can shave ten percent off the revenues casinos and race tracks make.

Gambling businesses often fight states' attempts to start lotteries. Racetracks fought lotteries in many states, and casinos have successfully kept lotteries out of Nevada, Alabama and Mississippi.

In Alabama, casinos in neighboring Mississippi funded church groups fighting to keep a lottery out.
