RALEIGH, N.C. — Money is expected to be an issue when NorthCarolina State University starts looking for a new leader.

The Raleigh research university said Friday that ChancellorMarye Anne Fox will leave N.C. State to become head of theUniversity of California at San Diego.

Fox's new salary won't be released until later this month, afterher deal with the California school is approved by that state'suniversity trustees.

University of North Carolina President Molly Broad says theoffer was so much larger than the nearly $250,000 Foxreceives from N.C. State that a counteroffer wasn't possible.

Broad says N.C. State's new chancellor will have to be offeredmore than what Fox was paid.

But UNC Board of Governors Chairman Brad Wilson says the stateuniversity system will be hard pressed to pay much more money. Hesays N.C. State has a positive momentum that will attract some ofthe best and brightest candidates in the country.
