DURHAM, N.C. — All eyes in the Mike Peterson weren't on the defense today. One of the most frequent courtroom spectators is the mother of Durham District Attorney Jim Hardin. WRAL's Scott Mason recently talked with Mrs. Hardin about her son and the family tragedy that changed their lives.
Of all the images in this trial, this image may be one of the more personal. 7:37,1 OH AM I PROUD OF HIM? YOU'RE TALKING TO HIS MOTHER WHO IS EXTREMELY PROUD, HA. :43
Carolyn Hardin is often in the courtroom, supporting her son who is prosecuting Mike Peterson.
31:18,9320 THE WRITER OF FICTION WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE PERFECT SOLUTION. :24
7:15,1 JIMMY WOULD NOT BE TRYING THIS CASE. HE BELIEVES ABSOLUTELY, WHOLEHEARTEDLY THAT MR. PETERSON IS GUILTY. :22
2:35,9451 IF MR. RUDOLPH...TO COMPLETE MY. :39 13:59,1 HE'S VERY DEFINITE, LIKE THEY SAY THERE'S AN IRON FIST IN THE VELVET GLOVE? THERE IS. :06
There has been tragedy in the Hardin family. When Jim was 13, his parent's house in Durham caught fire.
10:14,1 JIMMY TIED SHEETS TOGETHER AND TIED THEM TO HIS BEDPOST AND CAME DOWN THE WINDOW ON SHEETS. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE SLEEPING DOWNSTAIRS. :25
She and her husband also jumped out a window. But Jim's younger brother and two sisters did not get out of the house and died in the fire.
10:48,1 I THINK HE HAS A SURVIVAL COMPLEX. :52
11:02,1 HE TRIES TO MAKE UP FOR THE OTHER CHILDREN I THINK THAT DID NOT SURVIVE. :06
And now the trial. And another mother who has lost a child. Veronica Hunt - the mother of Kathleen Peterson.
15:01,1 I DON'T CARE IF THE CHILD IS AN INFANT OR IF THE CHILD IS GROWN, MOTHERS, THERE'S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT MOTHER THAT WE FEEL FOR EACH OTHER WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS. :14
And this mother feels for her son.
11:10,1 HE DOES, HE MAKES US VERY PROUD. :12
