NEW YORK — Rashad McCants scored 21 points, including the clinching free throws with 5-point-6 seconds to play, and Number 22 North Carolina beat St. John's 63-to-59 today in the consolation game of the Holiday Festival.
The Tar Heels had two players back who missed yesterday's loss to Iona. But they played their first full game without freshman center Sean May, who will miss eight-to-ten weeks with a broken foot.
Jawad Williams, who missed the Iona game with a stomach virus, had 17 points and ten rebounds for North Carolina. Raymond Felton added eleven points and nine assists.
Marcus Hatten had 19 points and ten rebounds for the Red Storm, which is 5-and-3.
At 8-and-3, the Tar Heels have already matched last season's win total.
