State police spokesman Larry Hill said the crash happened just east of Waverly at 10:38 a.m., blocking Route 460in both directions and closing the road for much ofthe day.
Police identified one of the victims as Okie Homer Boone, Jr., 35, of Gates, N.C., the operator of a logging truck.
The other victim, a 29-year-old woman whose identify has not been released, was driving a sports utility vehicle.
Hill said the SUV and Boone's truck were westbound when the truck hit the SUV, either because the truck drifted from the left lane, or because it tried to change lanes.
Boone lost control of his vehicle, which spun around and hit a red logging truck head on.
The SUV was caught between the two trucks as they collided.
The SUV hit a wrecker, flipping it, and a car crashed into thewreckage.
Boone was thrown from his vehicle as it overturned. He and the driver of the SUV died at the scene.
The driver of the other logging truck and a passenger of thewrecker were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious to critical injuries, Hill said.
The drivers of the wrecker and a car were taken to ObiciHospital in Suffolk, along with three children who were passengers in the car, Hill said. Their injuries were not life-threatening.
