Latesha Louis is being questioned by police in Richmond but hasn't been charged with any crimes, police said. She is assisting in the investigation, police said.
Mariah Poland was left in her mother's Honda Accord in the parking lot of Cousins Food Mart on West Ridge Street in Rocky Mount at about 1 a.m. Tuesday when a man jumped into the car and drove away, police said.
Amy Calvin, the girl's mother, told police she had stopped at the convenience store to see if she could get cardboard boxes because the family is moving.
Hours later, a Richmond police officer spotted the car and found the toddler still strapped in her car seat. Authorities said she was unharmed.
Police are still looking for the suspected thief -- a black man last seen wearing a black toboggan cap, a dark heavy jacket and black jeans.
