Software Firm Opens Durham Office With Team Of Laid-Off NetIQ Workers

DURHAM, N.C. — A Texas software company has opened a development center in the Research Triangle and staffed it with laid-off workers from another firm.

NetQoS

, a provider of network performance management software, hired 10 former workers from NetIQ. The Triangle operation will focus on network and application performance applications.

The NetIQ workers were among 50 let go this summer when NetIQ was acquired by Attachmate. At the time, Attachmate said the employees would be able to apply for other positions within the company.

Joel Trammell, the chief executive officer of NetQoS, knew some of the affected NetIQ workers and decided to hire them while at the same time opening an RTP facility, said Chandra Hosek, public relations manager for NetQoS.

“These employers were laid off from NetIQ and their jobs were shipped overseas,” Hosek said. “Our CEO had known some of these people for years and years. He saw an opportunity and took it.

“This was a great opportunity for us to get some engineering talent – software engineers, quality assurance and product engineers. They are a self-functioning team.”

The 10 employees average 15 years of experience.

NetQos, which is based in Austin, Texas, is privately held and growing fast. The firm has added 100 employees in 2006 and has been profitable for the past two years, according to Hosek. NetQos has raised $21 million in venture capital. It was founded in 1999.

The Durham office occupies 5,000 square feet, so there is room to add headcount, Hosek said. Although there are no plans to hire additional people at this point, NetQos could staff up to 20 people in that space, she added.

The development center is the second one outside of Austin that NetQos has opened. The Triangle operation will focus on adding features to NetQoS’ “Performance Center” product suite.

“The Research Triangle Park area afforded NetQoS the opportunity to add a well-balanced team with experience across the gamut of a product lifecycle, including planning, engineering, and documentation,” Trammell said in a statement. “These employees have deep experience in the network management space and provide us with increased resources to stay on the leading edge of network performance management technology.”

The Performance Center product is designed to customers to monitor and quantify network performance through a single web console. NetQoS customers include Chevron, Lockheed Martin, Siemens, Boeing and NASA.
