The last person who was called to the stand Wednesday was the husband of Shirley Newkirk. In April 2005, the retired Wake County teacher was shot in her driveway, but managed to crawl inside her home. That's when George Newkirk found her in the hallway.
"I got down beside her," George Newkirk testified. "When I did, I put my hand on the back of her neck and that's when I got this blood on it. I started saying, 'Shirley, Shirley, what has happened to you? What is wrong?'"
Newkirk said his wife never said anything, but he said he believes she was alive when he found her.
The defense starts its case on Thursday. Ezavia Allen could face the death penalty if convicted in the woman's murder.
