RALEIGH, N.C. — An North Carolina State diving coach, who quit after his record revealed two prior sex offense convictions, now wants his job back.
John Candler, who worked at the university for 36 years, pleaded guilty in 1966 to taking indecent liberties with a 12-year-old girl from Michigan. In 1985, he pleaded guilty to taking indecent liberties with a 15-year-old Wake County girl.
Candler said the university knew about his record prior to hiring him.
Candler did not resign until November when the university received an e-mail from a woman in Michigan about his past.
University officials said they accepted Candler's resignation and started looking for a replacement.
