GARNER, N.C. — An overnight accident killed a woman and injured a man in Wake County.

Troopers said at around 3 a.m. Wednesday, Robert Leingang III, 26, of Raleigh, was driving at more than 100 mph when he ran off the road on Old Garner Rd between Rock Quarry and Auburn-Knightdale Roads and hit a utility pole.

The impact of the accident broke the utility pole into three pieces and split the vehicle into two parts. Authorities said the front part of the vehicle landed more than 50 yards away from the rest of the vehicle. Candace Lawrence Snead, 22, of Willow Springs, who was a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Leingang is listed in critical condition at WakeMed. He has been charged with DWI, careless and reckless driving and driving with a revoked license.

Authorities said one home is without power. Progress Energy is working to replace the pole and restore electricity.
