RALEIGH, N.C. — A man was killed early Tuesday while trying to cross a downtown street, police said.

Chad Everett Reece, 34, of Raleigh, had stopped in the middle of Dawson Street between Hargett and Martin streets to let another vehicle pass at about 12:15 a.m. and then stepped in front of a Jeep driven by Ramone Alexander Council, 25, of Raleigh, according to an accident report.

Reece wasn't using a crosswalk at the time of the accident, police said. The impact propelled him about 110 feet down the street, police said.

There is no word on whether any charges will be filed in the case, which remains under investigation.
