Plea Deal Reached In Slaying At Southpoint

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A suspect in a fatal shooting at the Streets of Southpoint mall has been released from jail after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

Barry Ford Evans, 24, of 202 E. Club Blvd. in Durham, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to time served and three years on probation.

The charge stemmed from a November 2004 shooting at the end of the mall where the Southpoint Cinema is. Harvey Denard Wiggins, 23, of Raleigh, was shot in the head and died.

Police said the shooting occurred inside a car parked in an isolated area of the parking lot. Investigators said the incident was drug-related.

Prosecutors said Wiggins' mother agreed to the plea deal.
