PITTSBURGH — An 80-year-old New Bern man who died trying to save a woman and her child from a house fire is being honored today by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission.
Major Augustus Fisher died while trying to save Cynthia M. Davis and her one-year-old son Christian on September ninth, 2000.
Fisher entered the burning two-story house under the impression that Davis and her baby were still inside, when they had in fact escaped through a second-floor window.
Fisher's body was later found on the first floor near the stairs.
In all, 24 people are to be honored by the commission in ceremonies in Pittsburgh.
