SANFORD, N.C. — Sanford authorities are investigating two fatal accidents that occurred on consecutive days this weekend.

The most recent was Sunday morning. The accident, in which two people were killed, occurred around 4:30 a.m. on Broadway Road near Avent Ferry Road in Sanford.

The driver, Angela McAuley, 37, of Sanford, ran a stop sign and lost control of her '94 Nissan Quest, which overturned several times and caught on fire.

Her two passengers, 47-year-old Franklin Kelley, Jr., of Fayetteville St. in Sanford, and 46-year-old Julius Martin, also of Fayettevlle St., were both killed.

McAuley was life-flighted to UNC Hospitals, where she was in stable condition Sunday.

Police believe alcohol was a factor, but there was no word Sunday on whether any charges will be filed.

The accident happened less than a mile from a fatal accident that happened Saturday morning on Avent Ferry Rd. In that accident, James Lee Mashburn, 52, lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole.

Mashburn was ejected from his vehicle and was killed. Police said alcohol was not a factor in the wreck.
