Brad and Jeremy Denning of Roanoke Rapids had high hopes of catching big fish from the Roanoke River in Weldon. Instead, the brothers made a startling discovery.
"Something shiny caught me out of the corner of my eye. I thought it might be a fishing eye ring and I picked it up and said, 'Oh, this isn't a fishing eye ring,'" Brad Denning said.
Brad Denning said it was a gold ladies' wedding band. Seconds later, he found a matching man's wedding band. That is when his brother, Jeremy, jumped in.
"I completely forgot about fishing and laid my fishing stuff down and went running down the bank," Jeremy said. "I slipped down the bank and when I fell, I went to get back up. There was another ring in my face."
Authorities said the third ring was a class ring from a girl's catholic school in Philadelphia dated 1966. The school is working to identify the engraving inside the ring.
"The mystery right now is why they were there and who they belong to," said Detective Gene Harris of the Weldon Police Department. "We're looking at, right now, just identifying the owner. Beyond that, it's not much to work on."
