Person, Durham Deputies Injured In Wrecks Resulting From Chase

DURHAM COUNTY,N.C. — Four people, including two law enforcement officers, were treated for injuries after a high-speed chase through two counties Friday morning.

Officials said Roy Carter stole a car near Roxboro and led officers on a high-speed chase through Person and Durham counties, leaving a path of destruction along Highway 501.

Person County Deputy Rodney Poole was involved in a wreck just after 5:45 a.m. when he was struck by another vehicle while responding to a report of a stolen car. He is in good condition at Person Community Hospital.

"He has no regard for anybody. Look at all the lives he endangered going down 501 at that rate of speed," Person County Sheriff Dennis Oakley said.

Deputies attempted to stop Carter, who then took off and hit a car near Rougemont.

Carter continued toward Durham County, where Deputy Allen Wright picked up the chase.

Wright hit two other vehicles on southbound Highway 501 and Snow Hill Road, north of Durham, while in pursuit.

Wright was taken to Durham Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.Two other people involved in the wreck were taken to Duke Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Officials said Wright continued down Highway 501, causing another wreck near Horton Road.

Carter then got out of the car and fled on foot before being arrested. He was transported to Roxboro, where he is being held on $25,000 bond in the Person County Jail.

Carter has been convicted of larceny in Durham, Granville and Wake counties.
