RALEIGH, N.C. — A train crashed into an sport utility vehicle early Friday morning, killing the driver.
Raleigh police said the SUV stalled on the tracks near the intersection of Hillsborough Street and Powell Drive as a Norfolk Southern freight train was approaching around 1 a.m.
The train smashed into the vehicle, dragging the SUV about 50 feet, then flipping it.
Raleigh police said the SUV's driver, Elaina Byrd, 25, of Raleigh, was not inside the vehicle at the time, but that it appeared she was standing too close to it.
Byrd was struck and killed.
