The shooting occurred around 10:15 a.m. on a DATA bus near the intersection of Dowd Street and North Alston Avenue following a verbal confrontation between two 15-year-olds who had been suspended last week from Lakeview School for fighting.
Officials said one of the 15-year-olds pulled the cord to stop the bus near the intersection of Alston Avenue and Dowd Street. As he exited the bus, he reportedly got into a verbal confrontation with the other 15-year-old, who remained on the bus.
After the first juvenile got off the bus, he pulled out a handgun and fired at least two shots into the bus, according to witnesses.
According to police, the juvenile inside the bus stood up, pulled out a gun and tried to fire it, but the gun jammed, witnesses said. He and several friends then allegedly got out of the bus at the same stop and more shots were fired. It was unclear who fired the shots.
Officials said there were 14 people, including several students, on the bus when the shooting occurred. One woman, who suffered minor injuries from flying glass, was treated at the scene by paramedics.
The first teen is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and shooting into an occupied vehicle. The second teen, who turned himself in, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and going armed to the terror of the public.
