A Durham man was seriously injured when a car struck him Friday afternoon on N.C.55 near South Alston Avenue.

The accident happened at 2:10 p.m. A northbound 2003 Mitsubishi driven by Malcolm Leon Florence, 26, of Ridgeway Avenue, struck Otis Lee Williams, 47, of Piedmont Street.

Florence told officers he saw Williams standing in the roadway and swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting him.

Williams was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment of facial injuries and a broken leg.

Florence was charged with driving while his license was suspended. Police said the accident did not appear to be weather-related.
