Over a month ago, home builder Mark Davis said criminals took $25,000 worth of high-end appliances from a north Raleigh neighborhood before the owners moved in.
"It could be an inside job. It could be a buddy telling a buddy," he said.
Insurance companies usually cover some thefts, but oftentimes, the home buyers are the ones that have to fork over the money. Now, some housing companies are using surveillance equipment to protect their property. For example, a security tower holds four hermetically sealed cameras and an alarm that detects motion and keeps watch over the construction site. Officials said the tower is also mobile.
Security companies are also considering camera technology that would also housing companies and home owners see their property online.
Construction site crime has become such a problem that it has its own task force. Last year, area law enforcement agencies created "Operation Bobcat." The effort caught four men accused of stealing up to a $250,000 worth of items from construction sites.
