CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — The Highway Patrol said the driver of a tractor-trailer lost control of his rig near the Doc Bennett Road exit in Cumberland County just after 7 p.m. Tuesday, striking a bridge support.
The truck struck a concrete pillar that supports the bridge in the median of Interstate 95 south of N.C. 87.
The driver was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he is in a coma. The truck is a total loss.
An inspection by the Department of Transportation determined there was no significant damage to the bridge.
