Boy Dies After Being Rescued From Lake Gaston

WARRENTON, N.C. — A 4-year-old boy who wandered from his family in Warren County Sunday has died.

According to Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams, Warren County 911 got a call around 12:35 p.m. that the boy was missing in a neighborhood in the Lake Gaston area. Williams said the boy was outside raking leaves with his grandmother when he wandered off.

Williams said divers searched boat docks in the area, while volunteers searched the ground and canvassed the neighborhood. They were about to bring in diving dogs and a Highway Patrol helicopter with an infrared device that can look underwater when they got the call that Warren Rescue had found the boy underwater.

Rescuers started CPR and took the boy to Halifax Regional Hospital where he died early Monday morning.The sheriff said the boy had been under water for seven hours.

Williams was expected to meet with the district attorney to discuss whether charges should be filed.
