Knightdale Mayor Charged With DWI

Posted Updated

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — The newly elected mayor of Knightdale was arrested Sunday morning, charged with drunken driving.

The Highway Patrol found a 1994 Ford pickup that ran off the road and into a ditch on Forestville Road, just east of Knightdale at 1:10 a.m.

The trooper detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver, Douglas McKinley Boyd, 56, of Knightdale. Boyd's blood-alcohol level was later found to be a .15. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with DWI.

Boyd posted bond and returned to work Monday at his full-time job as community development specialist with the state Division of Emergency Management.

Town council members declined to comment about Boyd. In November, he was elected with no political experience.

If convicted, Boyd faces disciplinary action from his state job, which could face from a written warning to a dismissal.
