Granville County Man Charged With Shooting Wife

Posted Updated

GRANVILLE COUNTY, N.C. — Creedmoor police are trying to figure out why a man shot his wife of nearly 40 years.

Alene Ray, 70, is recovering at Duke Hospital. Investigators say her 63-year-old husband, William, shot her in the head as she sat in front of her computer.

Around 9 a.m. Friday, authorities say William Ray, a retired federal employee, called 911 requesting an ambulance. He also threatened suicide. Police took Ray into custody before he hurt himself.

"To me, they were a loving couple," neighbor Shirley Rogers said. "I couldn't actually comprehend William being angry enough with anybody to harm anybody, especially Alene."

Authorities say Ray had mentioned to them that he and his wife got into an argument about his mother's living situation even though authorities say his mother has been dead for a year. Ray said he does not remember saying that to authorities and he does not remember the shooting.

Ray was charged with assault with a deadly weapon. He is at the jail under $300,000 bond.
