CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A Charlotte business developer received the green light to go ahead with development plans in Chatham County Monday.
County commissioners unanimously voted to rezone 28 acres of land for a strip mall and office space to be called Chatham Downs. The proposed shopping center will be built along Highway 15-501 near Lystra Road.
Construction on the project could begin early next year.
About 1,300 people living nearby have signed a petition opposing the project and said they still plan to try to stop the shopping center from being built.
An initial motion to deny the request failed buy a 2-3 vote.
