Suspended Johnston County Teacher Loses Appeal To Return To Job

Posted Updated

JOHNSTON COUNTY, N.C. — A local high school teacher suspended for a chemistry experiment lost his appeal to return to class during the investigation.

Last week, thirty-eight students at Smithfield-Selma High School volunteered to drink a gallon of milk in an hour after Ferguson's explanation that stomach acid makes it humanly impossible. Thirteen of the students later threw up.

Jeff Ferguson was suspended with pay while the Johnston County Superintendent Jim Causby looks into the experiment.

The judge denied Ferguson's request Wednesday, despite having the support of students.
