Raleigh Authorities Investigate Deadly 2-Car Accident

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh authorities are investigating a car accident that killed one person and injured two others Sunday morning.

The accident happened at approximately 12:36 a.m. on Southall Road near Buffaloe Road. It involved a 1989 Mercury sedan and a Ford Explorer.

Both vehicles reportedly were traveling southbound on Southall Road when the Mercury failed to decrease in speed, hitting the Explorer from behind. The Mercury then swerved off the road, hitting a tree, killing the driver and injuring a passsenger.

The Explorer reportedly began to run off the road. The driver overcorrected, and the vehicle flipped.

The driver of the Explorer was 21-year-old Desiree Roberts of Raleigh. She was transported to WakeMed with minor injuries.

The name of the Mercury driver had not been released by Sunday night. The passenger was 18-year-old David Gonzalas of Raleigh, and he was transported to WakeMed.

Two other passengers who were in the Mercury reportedly fled the scene.
