The person behind the wheel when it happened is not even old enough to drive. Nor did she have a learner's permit.
According to investigators, 15-year-old Brittany Ledford was driving a Chevrolet Malibu at about 12:25 p.m. and turned left in front of an Isuzu Trooper at the corner of Maxwell Road and Wade-Stedman Road.
The SUV -- driven by 37-year-old Laura Ammons of Godwin -- hit Ledford's car and spun it into a second car. The second car, a Buick, was driven by 74-year-old Lemuel Faircloth Jr. of Fayetteville.
Ledford's passenger, 33-year-old Christy Calabrese, was killed. Calabrese's 7-year-old son, Daniel, was thrown from the car but survived.
Brittany Ledford, Daniel Calabrese and Ammons all were transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Faircloth was not taken to the hospital.
Ledford does not have a driver's license. A trooper with the Highway Patrol said Monday that she does not have a learner's permit, either.
According to people at the scene, Calabrese was letting Ledford drive her car back from church. Calabrese lived with Ledford, but they were not related.
