Sanford Police Continue Gathering Clues In Robbery, Fatal Shooting

Posted Updated

SANFORD, N.C. — While family and friends comforted the victim's husband, Sanford police were back at the scene of a fatal shooting Monday, looking for clues about the person they say robbed and killed a business owner.

Police said the robbery and shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. Saturday on South Horner Street. Byron Ramirez and his wife, Maria, were walking out of their store with the day's deposits when a man shot Maria Ramirez in the face.

The suspect, who reportedly stood about 5 feet 8 inches and spoke in Spanish, took the bank deposits Maria Ramirez was carrying. Maria Ramirez, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, the suspect got into an older model white Ford Crown Victoria parked in a nearby lot.

Police say they only have a few clues to go on. Anyone with information is asked to call police.

As they comforted Byron Ramirez on Monday, friends and family members left candles and flowers at the spot where the shooting occurred.
