Durham novelist Mike Peterson was convicted in October of killing his wife, Kathleen. Starting next Thursday, everything in the house will have a price tag on it. For $20 on Thursday, you will get a sneak peak of the sale items. Then on Friday, people can start buying.
"There's a little bit of something for everyone in all price ranges," liquidator Jim Kennedy said.
When the sale starts, officials are asking that you use the back entrance on Kent Street and arrive early.
"We will give out numbers and they'll go in by numbers. We'll be able to accommodate 50 people to start with and try to keep the flow going," Kennedy said.
More than 1,000 items are for sale, including patio furniture, plants, Oriental art and wall screens. There is also a banquet-size dining room table and a wide variety of books. Some items will go for as little as $1 while others may go for as much as $3,000. Kennedy said all of it will be priced to sell.
"Everything will be a bargain when it comes down to it," he said.
The sale starts Friday at 1 p.m. and runs until 6 p.m. On Saturday, the sale will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, the sale will be from noon until 4 p.m. On Monday, a clearance sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. There is no charge for admission to the sale itself.
Cash and checks are being accepted. Credit cards will not be accepted.
The money from the sale will be divided among the five children in the Peterson family. The money that goes to Kathleen Peterson's daughter, Caitlin Atwater, will be considered an advance on the judgment in her civil suit against her stepfather. Atwater filed a wrongful death suit against Peterson last year.
